With the use of alchemy, he splits his soul into nine separate fragments, and each one comes to inhabit the small doll-like vessels he constructs. Years after his death, the last of his creations, 9, awakens in a post-apocalyptic world and accidentally reawakens the very thing that had destroyed mankind. Now he must search for a way to destroy it, before it destroys him and his predecessors.

PERSONALITY.

The last created of nine homunculi, 9 is the very embodiment of curiosity, light and initiative. His insatiable desire to learn and gather new information has sometimes driven him and others into trouble. Luckily, rather than be one to avoid his problems, 9 does what he can to make up for them. He's shown to be somewhat courageous and valiant, volunteering himself to rescue others of his kind even on his lonesome. He puts others before himself, and is willing to pay the ultimate price if it means making things right. His eagerness to face conflict rather than avoid it eventually gains the favor of the other stitchpunks, who eventually regard him as a leader. He's also quite intelligent; though small and fragile, he has a creative and resourceful vein that he taps into in tight situations to help get himself and others out of trouble. He often avoids physical conflict, preferring to use brain over brawn to triumph over tribulation. Ultimately, he is the curious, naive, but leaderly type, and his strong sense of action is a light that guides others.

HISTORY.

9's story begins well before his creation, when a lone scientist is commissioned by the chancellor of his country to build a Fabrication Machine. Shortly after the machine was activated by its creator, it is forcefully taken away from him, and promptly put to work as the constructor for machines of war. Cracking under the pressure of its increasing abuse and constant work, the Fabrication Machine ultimately revolts, and programs its creations to attack humanity. As mankind in this fictional Europe are slowly driven to the edge of destruction, the scientist who created the Fabrication Machine works in secret, seeing the destruction his creation has caused. In an effort to preserve life in their dying world, he uses an alchemic talisman to split his soul into nine fragments, and transfers each one into a doll-like vessel. The very last of his creations, 9, results in his death.Years would pass before 9 actually awakened—and when he eventually did, he found himself in a cold, quiet and dead world inhabited only by the others of his kind. While setting out to rescue one of his kin, 2, 9 accidentally reawakens the then dormant Fabrication Machine, which immediately sets out to destroy the remaining stitchpunks. As he and the others dance with death from killer machines, 9 desperately searches for a way to destroy the Fabrication Machine for good—before it is too late.
